Certified Cycling Instructor

Andrea Z Aponte

I’m a native of Lima, Peru who’s been residing in Southern California for almost 30 years. I’ve been navigating the streets of Los Angeles by bicycle since 2004.

I am a certified bicycle riding skills instructor through The League of American Bicyclists and work with the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, Sustainable Streets and Metro Los Angeles (BEST classes and Bike Share).

March 2021 marked a transformative moment for me – I decided to rekindle my passion for bike riding. However, I was held back by self-doubt, having last ridden a bike at the age of 12. Now, at 60 years old, I mustered up the courage to search for “bike instructors for adults” and serendipitously found Andrea. Her patience, encouragement, and infectious enthusiasm made our weekly lessons an absolute joy. In a remarkably short period, I was able to ride an impressive 11 miles at a time. Andrea is truly a guardian angel, and bike riding has become a symbol of my renewed youthfulness, empowering me to feel alive and vibrant once again!

I received my Cycling Instructor Certification (LCI #4511) from the League of American Bicyclists, the oldest bicycle advocacy group in the United States. I’ve been teaching regularly since 2014. I teach a variety of private and group courses (in English and Spanish)- from beginner classes for adults and children learning how to ride a bike for the first time, to traffic skills classes for intermediate and advanced riders.

I work in conjunction with nonprofits and organizations such as Sustainable Streets, Bike LA (formerly the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition or LACBC), and Metro Los Angeles (BEST classes and Bike Share).

I’m an advocate for active transportation and a feminist, hoping to inspire more people to ride bicycles.

My educational journey to becoming a confident city cyclist provided a path to foster my passion for the environment. Cycling isn’t just a fun activity, but also a tool for transportation as well as a solution to environmental, social equity and health issues which affect our communities.

I would be honored to be of assistance on your particular bicycle journey.
